Bullying is an act of repeated aggressive behaviour in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterised by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person. Behaviours may include name calling, verbal or written abuse, exclusion from activities or social situations, cyber-bullying (which involves use of email, text messages or chat-rooms to humiliate or cause distress), physical abuse and coercion.
The effects of bullying can be serious and sometimes even fatal. Victims of bullying can suffer from long term emotional and behavioural problems. Bullying can cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, lead to low self-esteem, and increased susceptibility to illness.
